custom lasting three thousand years
She buys a fine steed at the east market; a saddle and blanket at the west market; a bridle at the south market; and a long whip at the north market.
- The Ballad of Mulan
The history of ji shi in our country can date back to the barter system of the late primitive society. Markets had already emerged during the time of Shennong. By the Shang and Zhou dynasties, “shell money” was being used in transactions, and markets began to take on more defined forms. During the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods, many renowned merchants emerged, such as Fan Li, honored as the “Merchant Saint", and Lü Buwei, known as the “Merchant Prime Minister". In the Qin Dynasty, the unification of wheel tracks, currency, and weights and measures stimulated the market trade. To enhance regulation, the Qin government established "fixed markets” - enclosed spaces with high walls where people could freely set up stalls. During the Han Dynasty, markets(referred to as “Hu markets") were established in border regions. Major cities such as Chang'an, Luoyang, and Chengdu emerged as prominent economic centers. In the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an and Luoyang thrived with the merchants, both local and foreign, fostering a booming trade network. Due to the Tang Dynasty's enforcement of a night curfew, markets were only active during the daytime. The Song Dynasty abolished the night curfew, ushering in an era of flourishing night markets. These markets became lively hubs not only in the capital, Dongjing, but also in other cities where night markets gained widespread popularity. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the market economy had reached unprecedented levels of prosperity, with the Four Great Towns achieving widespread acclaim.
On a designated day, people joyfully gather at the market.

Dizhou Tong is a well-familiar name in China, as there is a story about him in one of the elementary school textbooks. The story describes how he came from a poor family and could not go to high school until the age of 17, and how his resolution and diligence made him a successful biologist. But in the academic community, he is remembered and respected for another reason - the outstanding achievement of cross-species cloning in fish.

In 1930, Tong married Yufen Ye, a biologist who later specialized in embryology. With financial support from his brothers, Tong started doctoral study in the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium in 1930. Tong learned from famous European embryologists when studying in Belgium, and published several papers after careful observation and research, which exerted great effects on the biological field of Europe at that time.
the age of 16, Tong enrolled in a school that trained primary school teachers. A year later Tong left to attend the Ningbo Xiaoshi High School. At the age of 17, Tong was the
At the end of 1934, Tong returned to China and became a professor of biology at Shandong University. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression,

B. Regret.
C. Loneliness.

Sunset Reflections
I sat beside the shallow lake, observing the sun descending towards the horizon. I rested my head against the wall, my eyes filled with the sunset glow. The wintry air imparted a thick and heavy feeling.
The wind swept past me with a silent laugh, its coldness seeping deep into my bones as it danced across the lake, leaving small ripples in its wake.
I watched the water flowing serenely like gliding silk. The light, reflecting off its surface, shattered into a thousand fragments, drifting with the current - vanishing and reappearing in a fluid dance.
What is the meaning of life to the sunset? Each time I behold it, I feel a sense of pity. It has only a brief moment of appearance each day, never fully experiencing the world in its entirety. It is permanent in its daily recurrence yet fleeting in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. Aren't our lives just like this? We, too, are short-lived when compared to the cosmos. Perhaps, then, we should strive to render our lives meaningful, briliant and glorious - much like the sunset.
