1 Nikola Tesla would have celebrated his 165th birthday on July 10, 2021. The Serbian-American scientist was a brilliant and eccentric genius whose inventions enabled modern-day power and mass communication systems.
2 His nemesis and former boss, Thomas Edison, was the iconic American inventor of the light bulb, the phonograph and the motion picture camera. The two feuding geniuses waged the “War of the Currents"in the 1880s over whose electrical system would power the world—-Tesla's alternating current (AC) system or Edison's rival direct current (DC) electric power.

From their starkly different personalities to their lasting legacies, here's how the two dueling inventors stack up.

10 “If Edison hadn't invented those things, other people would have," said DeGraaf.
11 In a short-sighted move, Edison dismissed Tesla's “impractical" idea of an AC system of electric power transmission, instead promoting his simpler, but less efficient, DC system.
12 By contrast, Tesla's ideas were often more disruptive technologies that didn't have a built-in market demand. And his AC motor and hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls-a first-of-its-kind power plant truly electrified the world.
13 Tesla also spent years working on a system designed to wirelessly transmit messages, voices and imagesmaking him a futurist, and the true father of radio, cell phones and television in a sense.
14 “Our entire mass communication system is based on Tesla's system," said Marc Seifer, author ofWizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla.
15 Unfortunately, Tesla's grand scheme failed when his financial backer, J.P. Morgan, became fed up with years of failure.
Whohad abiggerimpact?
16 @ “Edison's enduring legacy isn't a specific patent or technology, but his invention factories, which divided the innovation process into small tasks that were carried out by legions of workers,”" DeGraaf said. For instance, Edison got the idea for a motion picture camera

from a photographer, but thenleft most of the experimentation and prototyping to his assistants. By having multiple patents and inventions developing in parallel, Edison, in turn, ensured that his assistants had a stable financial situation to continue running experiments and fleshing out more designs.

① According to the passage, what made Edisona more successful and influential inventorcomparedwithTesla?
18Tesla’s inventions are the backbone of modern power and communication systems, but he faded into obscurity later in the 20th century, when most of his inventions were lost to history. And despite his many patents and innovations, Tesla was destitute when he died in 1943.

We would have lost so many precious image records from that time, such as the portraits of those historical figures, through which we can have a better glimpse of their life. ln the ensuing 2oth century, the birth of the Internet revolutionized the way people lived and its impact will remain far-reaching for many years to come. Another example of how creativity has positively influenced the world happened just recently, with the introduction of hybrid cars. Instead of relying on as much oil as other cars do in order to operate, these cars use alternative energy sources. Without the creative minds behind the invention of these cars, the world @ will rely very much on its limited oil reserves. Because of creativity, the world has a chance to use other energy sources for car running.

In addition to these practical applications, ordinary people benefit as much from the stimulation brought by the creativity in the arts. In a world what is dominated by competitions and torn apart by material comforts, entertainers in the arts can inspire hope and change in everyone. A boy watching a Charlie Chaplin's film might decide to become a comedian, or a girl observing a Monet's paint in a museum might become an art teacher. who knows? The arts can transport people to other places and into different ways of thinking.
In a word, as both a problem-solving method and a source of inspiration, creativity is needed in the world.

A Find two difficult sentences in thepassage.Write them downintheWorkbookand translatethemintoChinese.
B What is your impression on creative people?
CWhy don't people thinkthe author is logical?
Creativity is very logical
All of my life, people have told me that I am creativeor crazy—and Ihavecometobelieve them. Certainly, I have an overactive imagination; I have been an artist and

author, and Iam considered a little eccentric by many people. So, when I tell people I am very logical, their usual reaction is to laugh as if I have said something utterly absurd.
2There aretworeasonsfor theirlaughter.Thefirst is theleft-brain/ right-brain myth. Although it proves wrong again and again, many people believe the highly creative people are right-brain thinkers. That is, they are spontaneous, emotionally driven and passionate, while left-brain thinkers are logical and analytical but not creative, at least according to the myth.
3 Yet, ask these same people for examples of creative thinkers, and they are likely to include people like Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton, both of whom were logical and analytical thinkers.
How about musicians such as Bach,Beethoven, and Mozart?Well, their works are often very emotionally driven. But music itself is very mathematical and requires a logical structure. This is why a child playing random keys on a piano often makes a terrible sound.
5Shakespeare then?Surely he captured thehuman emotions.Yes,but he also wrote well-structured plots in his plays. His sonnets and parts of his playswerewritteniniambicpentameter(avery structured approach to writing in verse in which you use lines of a specific number of syllables and stresses). That requires logical and analytical thinking.
6 In truth, most creative people use both logic and emotions in their ideas.
Status quozlogic
7 The second reason people laugh when I say I am very logical is that they confuse following the status quo with logical thinking, which is ridiculous and not at all logical! Following a logical train of thought, even if it goes against the status quo, is far more logical. It can also be very creative. After all, most truly creative ideas go against the status quo. Indeed, the creative thinkers, whom I've listed above, all rejected thestatus quoinfavor of their own thinkingwhich, tothem, was very logical. Moreover, as a consequence of their creativity, they each changed the status quo.
Creative thinkers arelogical thinkers
8In my experience, creative people are almost always logical thinkers. However, their logic is not based on the status quo always being right; it is not based on doing things exactly as they have always been done; it is not about conforming to the way everyone else thinks. It is about establishing a logic that makes sense to the creative thinker and his audience (be they fans of his music, followers of his science papers or readers of his novels).

D In thelast sentence of Paragraph8,the structure "be they..", often followed by two or more terms of the same nature, means "whether they(should)be.." The structure "be it..." is used in the same way. In an adverbialclause ofconcession introduced by"whether", when the verbis in subjunctive mood, invertedordercanbe used.Forexample,Beitfood orthearts, thepolicywill undoubtedlyhaveasimilar impact.Maketwosentences with "be they.." and "be it..."
E According to the passage, what is creative thinkers'logic about?
9There are two things you can take away from this passage. Firstly, if you have a great idea that makes sense to you,but veers from popular thinking, do not be swayed by the status quo. Logic is more often right than popular opinion. But be aware that such creative ideas are seldom popular at first!
F What are the two things you canlearnfrom thispassage?
10 Secondly, if you are in charge of innovation in an organization, or if you are in charge of an organization, evaluate ideas based on logic rather than conformity to corporate thinking. Organizations have their own status quo into which most thinking tends tofall.A cleveridea that makes sense logically and which is aligned with corporate vision, but fails to conform to corporate thinking, should be developed further in spite of resistance.
11 Because, in spite of what many people think, creativity is often very logical!
GDiscusswithyourclassmates how to become more creative in life.
Task 2 The new words and phrases from the passage are given below. Follow the example in Task 2 onPage 28 and complete the task.
overactive utterly absurd left-brain right-brain myth passionate analytical status quo go against in favor of conform veer sway corporate fall into align
Task 3 Write the main idea for each of the following parts. That of Part I has been done for you.

ll.Paragraphs2-6 | |
Il. Paragraph 7 | |
IV. Paragraph 8 | |

EXTENDEDREADING

9 Task 1 Read the passage and look up the new words and phrases in the dictionary.
Creative collaboration is what humans do best
Humans have incredible creative potential. Our knack for creating megacities, double-decker airplanes, cures for hundreds of diseases, symphonies, virtual reality games, and other remarkable inventions, attests to our capacity to imagine possibilities and make them real. We identified this human potential long ago, when we named our own species “sapiens", which means “wise". Indeed, our talent for creativity is what makes humans exceptional.
A certain while ago, several groups of smallfangless, clawless, hornless and upright primates started on a distinctive journey: they creatively collaborated in ways no other creature had. They reshaped stones into tools, explored new foods and ways to get them, ventured into new lands, and slowly remade the world around them. Those first tools and stones artfully crafted into cutting, chopping and smashing utensils are the ancestors of today's kitchen knives, food processors, and high-speed blenders. And those small primates, who survived against all odds, are the ancestors of us.
3 About 2.5 million years ago, our ancestors learned to make tools and work together to hunt collaboratively and creatively, to forage for, and to process new and more nutritious foods. Around 1.5 million years ago, they tamed fire and used it to change night to day. About 40,000 years ago, they painted wondrous scenes on the walls of caves. Nearly 10,000 years ago, our ancestors began settling down, creatively reshaping landscapes and the bodies of plants and animals, and altering the very structure of the global ecosystem. They created towns, cities, and nations, developed large-scale religions, economies and warfare, and fashioned new types of inequality (gender, wealth, class and ethnicity). A good look at our evolutionary history shows us that collaborative creativity was the key to our development in the past, and holds the key to our future.
Creativity is not a private endeavor vested in a single person or a select group of people. It is not solely about genius in the arts or sciences, or actions by prominent artists, celebrities or politicians. It is not even limited to the work of particularly original thinkers. Creativity emerges from the interconnections of ideas, experiences, and imagination.
5 Creativity is a two-stage process. First, it is the ability to confront a challenge, or work through an idea or a concept by imagining possible outcomes not automatically evident from the materials and situation at hand. Second, it is the capacity to make that imagined outcome into materially resounding reality. To be creative is to tap into our mental pool of resources, our experiences, and our connections and use them to create something new, revised, practical, or outlandish. Human creativity is our ability to move back and forth between the realms of “what is" and “what could be".
6 We are even wired for it. When we collaborate, work, strategize, imagine, or just hang out with one or more other people, our bodies and minds benefit. If we participate in an activity that involves our distinct human capacity to imagine, create, or enjoy wondrous imagery, sound, sensations, and passions, like music, theater, songs, drawing, poetry, prose, carpentry, or cooking a great dinner, it stimulates cognitive and physiological processes bolstering our creative capacity.
7 We creatively solve problems almost every day. Be it in the physics lab, the artist's studio, the restaurant kitchen, the mechanic's garage, and the corner cubicle, or even in figuring out how to make a small paycheck last until the end of the month, we, with and without the assistance of others, tap into our creative spark all the time. It is what enables us to reach beyond being a successful species to become an exceptional one.
8 On the whole, humans are creative and collaborative. And most of our creative and collaborative actions have beneficial outcomes. It is the creative trying that makes humans exceptional.
Task 2 Tell whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F) or not mentioned (UN) according to the passage.
1 Human ancestors are small primates who had to collaborate creatively in order to survive.
2 Our ancestors created towns, cities, and nations about 100,0o0 years ago.
3 It has been proved that collaborative creativity was the only key factor to our success in the past, and holds the key to our future.
4 Genius in the arts or sciences, or actions by prominent artists, celebrities, or politicians played a very important part in the progress of our history.
5 Human creativity is our ability to move back and forth between two big countries.
6 All our creative and collaborative actions will bring beneficial results.
